Disneyland candymaker dies

Rob McHargue spent 43 years as a candy maker at the Candy Palace in Disneyland.  He was a regular sight for guests peeking in the windows as they made their way down Main Street.

His welcoming spirit and attentiveness, especially to the youngest visitors, made him something of a legend at the park. And just this past January he received the Walt Disney Legacy Award, the highest honor cast members, crew members and Imagineers can achieve at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

Sadly, McHargue passed away on December 2nd. He was on a short vacation from his job making the amazing seasonal candy canes that Disneyland guests often wait hours for.

Tiffany Marie, who spent three years working with McHargue at Disneyland, said “He was the kindest man – he dedicated his life to helping people,” Marie said. “And I never met a man who cared so much about the product he put out. He cared about making magical moments for guests, especially children.”

His brother, Mike McHargue, said his Rob’s passing was “totally unexpected,” and that he’d planned to return to work the following Tuesday.

A resident of Garden Grove and, later, Stanton, McHargue is scheduled to be interred Saturday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cypress.  He was 63 years old. He is survived by his mother, Shirley McHargue, brother Mike and sister Jeannette Boyd.

His brother said he had a “servant’s heart.” And it was the children that really lit up when they saw him.  “He was one of those guys who would stop and wave to the kids, and talk to the guests,” Mike McHargue said.

Rob McHargue, and his sweet treats, will certainly be missed by Disneyland guests.
