Disney VoluntEARS Bring the Magic of Reading to the Anaheim Community

Disney VoluntEARS from Disneyland Resort and Disney Publishing Worldwide joined forces to bring the joy of reading to families, children, and educators by delivering an impressive collection of 40,000 children’s books.

Recognizing the significance of access to books for families, Guadalupe Gomez, the library services manager at Anaheim Public Library: Haskett Branch, highlighted the value of such contributions. She emphasized the challenges that families with multiple children often face in obtaining books for each child. The donation of books by Disney provides a valuable opportunity to enhance literacy skills and foster a love for reading among children and families.

Disney’s commitment to promoting literacy stretches back to 2000 when the company began donating millions of books to First Book, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free and affordable books, resources, and essential supplies to educators serving underprivileged children. Through this collaboration, children in Anaheim and beyond can now enjoy a wide range of new books throughout the summer. From enchanting Disney tales that can be enjoyed in just five minutes to bedtime storybooks and novels featuring beloved princesses, pirates, and superheroes, there is something to captivate readers of all ages.

Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken expressed her appreciation for the impact that reading, libraries, and volunteer efforts have on the community. She acknowledged the transformative power of books and the crucial role that libraries and volunteers, like those from Disney, play in making a positive difference. The collective efforts of all involved serve to create a heartwarming experience that benefits children and families in the city of Anaheim.

Cast members from Disneyland Resort’s HOLA Readers program gathered at Orange Grove Elementary School to engage third-grade students in an enriching experience of bilingual story time, career days, and 12 weeks of interactive learning. Throughout the morning, the dedicated cast members read captivating stories in both English and Spanish, creating a dynamic and inclusive environment for the children.

Juan Aldava, associate coordinator of the Downtown Disney District and a long-time Disney VoluntEAR, had the pleasure of attending the event alongside his five-year-old daughter, April. Expressing enthusiasm for the occasion, Juan highlighted the significance of sharing the magic of Disneyland with the community of Anaheim and extending it to their own families.

This special event is made possible through the support of Disney Future Storytellers, a commitment by The Walt Disney Company to inspire and empower the next generation of diverse storytellers and innovators. By partnering with organizations like First Book, Disney Future Storytellers aims to encourage children to dream about their future, nurture their talents and skills, and become the individuals they envision themselves to be. The event serves as a testament to Disneyland’s ongoing dedication to fostering a love for learning, language, and imagination in the community and beyond.
