Disney Targets Pixar Animation Studios in Latest Round of Layoffs

Pixar Animation Studios has recently made significant job cuts, eliminating 75 positions, including two executives associated with the underperforming film “Lightyear,” according to sources. This marks the first significant wave of layoffs at the studio in the past decade.

Among those affected by the cuts is Angus MacLane, the director of “Lightyear,” who has been a part of Pixar for 26 years and has contributed to the creative teams of acclaimed films like “Toy Story 4” and “Coco.” Additionally, Galyn Susman, the producer of “Lightyear,” has also departed. Susman has been with Pixar since the release of the original “Toy Story” in 1995.

The sources also reported that Michael Agulnek, Pixar’s vice president of worldwide publicity since 2015, was laid off as well.

These job cuts, which occurred last week, are part of Walt Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger’s previously announced plan to reduce 7,000 jobs and cut costs by $5.5 billion. The restructuring involved merging the film and television groups into a single Disney Entertainment unit and eliminating a distribution division.

Although the number of layoffs is relatively small compared to Pixar’s total employee count of around 1,200, the impact is noteworthy because Pixar is known for its creative prowess in developing franchises and characters that drive revenue for Disney.

Pixar has been renowned for its cinematic franchises, such as “Toy Story,” “The Incredibles,” and “Cars.” However, “Lightyear,” released approximately a year ago with a reported budget of $200 million, achieved only modest global ticket sales of $226.7 million and received mixed reviews from critics.
