2019 is shaping up to be a very big year for Disney. There are major expansions coming to the theme parks, acquisition of 20th Century Fox and a rollout of the company’s first streaming service Disney+. Disney has kept a lot of specifics for the platform under wraps but has been slowly trickling out details to increase public interest. It seems that tactic is paying off as experts are now predicting Disney+’s membership numbers to be higher than that of Netflix.
J.P. Morgan Analyst Alexia Quadrani recently commented to clients that Disney+ membership is expected to reach 160 million subscribers worldwide. This prediction would put the service above Netflix which currently has 139 million subscribers to the service. “While there is little question there are more direct-to-consumer services today than ultimately should survive, we have no doubt that Disney+ remains on the short list of products that should prevail longer-term. Our confidence in the resilient success of Disney+ comes from the company’s unmatched brand recognition, extensive premium content, and unparalleled ecosystem to market the service.”, Quadrani said. While this prediction bodes well for Disney+, it will most likely take them years to distribute the service worldwide and ramp up to those membership numbers.
These predictions come as little surprise when given Disney’s vast catalog of properties it’s planning to bring to the service. It was announced recently that Disney would be pulling all of their content from Netflix and moving them over to Disney+. Combining that with the shows and movies already in development specifically for the platform, Disney+ is definitely shaping up to be a behemoth in an evergrowing crowd of streaming services.
