What will Disney commit to for construction of rides and attractions over the next three years? We know Magic Kingdom is getting a Tron attraction and Epcot’s Ratatouille ride is closer to being finished. But the global pandemic has hit both the theme park and tourism industry quite hard in the past six months.
The Walt Disney Company’s Chief Financial Official, Christine McCarthy, recently spoke at a Bank of America Virtual Media conference. She addressed Disney’s current business priorities and the effects of the pandemic during the Communications and Entertainment Conference.
According to her, Disney expects to open slightly more than 50% of its resorts by the end of this month. The Orlando Sentinel notes how she says the upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser resort is a priority.
“We’ve really prioritized some of our investment spending. The ones that we’re really focused on are things like the Star Wars hotel that we’ve discussed publicly that will be in Walt Disney World. That’s a priority.”
-Christine McCarthy
McCarthy also spoke about Disneyland’s future. The priorities for the west coast are finishing Avengers Campus and building Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
McCarthy’s update is significant because many of the upcoming projects at theme parks are on hold. For instance, Disney paused Epcot’s refurbishment of Spaceship Earth and the new Mary Poppins attraction. It’ll take some recovery time before we see projects revisited by the company. Also, we know Splash Mountain is getting a Princess and the Frog retheme, but no dates are given yet for when that will start.
