Disney had previously announced that the creative team of Disney Imagineers in California would need to decide if they will retire, quit, or move to Florida after The Walt Disney Company announced the Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) division from Glendale, California would be relocating to Lake Nona, Florida near Walt Disney World Resort. Now, members of the Imagineering team who are LGBTQ+ members or allies are concerned about the move after the passing of the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill in Florida.
Concerned cast members have already scheduled walkouts in protest of the move and are calling for Disney to reverse the decision to move WDI to Lake Nona, Florida as an act of solidarity with the community of LGBTQ+ cast members.
It should be noted that on March 11th Disney CEO Bob Chapek released a statement to employees throughout the Walt Disney Company addressing complaints against the inaction of TWDC about the recently passed legislation and after a joint statement was released by concerned staff members at Pixar Animation Studios about the active censorship of “overtly gay affection” in Pixar films. Chapek has assured a response and implementation will be presented in the coming weeks by TWDC, but the company has yet to release a formal statement regarding the concerns at the time of writing.
