Disney Has Episode of 'Golden Girls' Removed from Hulu for Featuring Blackface

Disney Has Episode of ‘Golden Girls‘ Removed from Hulu for Featuring Blackface. A controversial episode of The Golden Girls has been removed from Hulu for featuring a joke about the use of blackface. Though the characters Rose and Blanche are featuring mud masks and not intentionally using blackface, fans have been calling for the episodes removal pretty much since its premiere on NBC.

The episode features a storyline where Dorothy’s son chose to marry an older black woman. Neither Dorothy or the mother of the bride were thrilled at the prospect of their children’s marriage, but there was a reference to the use of blackface within the episode when Blanche and Rose enter while the bride’s family is present and say “This is mud on our faces, we’re not really Black.” Though the intended use of the mud masks was to crack a joke to break tension within the episode, it was never really received well by audiences, and has now been removed from the shows line-up on Hulu. It is unknown if the episode will also be removed from syndication.

The Golden Girls is not the first television series to come under fire for the use or reference of blackface. Other series such as 30 Rock, The Office, Community, and SNL have been under fire for the use of blackface in various episodes.

Hulu is an American subscription video on demand service fully controlled and majority-owned by Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International, a business segment of The Walt Disney Company, with NBCUniversal, owned by Comcast, as an equity stakeholder.
