Can you imagine a rethemed Tower of Terror featuring both Doctor Strange and Spider-Man? It turns out Disney considered this possibility when they were planning to retheme Tower of Terror in California. The Imagineers knew they wanted a Marvel superhero to replace the ride and thought the Sorcerer Supreme would be a great fit. The early plans included both Doctor Strange and Spider-Man as the heroes guests would see on the attraction.
However, they decided to go another direction with cosmic heroes. The Tower of Terror ride turned into Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! Even though Disneyland Resort ultimately chose the Guardians of the Galaxy as the new retheme, Spidey is getting his own attraction!
Web-Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure
Brent Strong is an Executive Creative Director with Walt Disney Imagineering. He describes the upcoming Spider-Man attraction in the following text:
“This is where we truly get to step up and answer the call and become heroes, and join Spider-Man on an action-packed adventure where you actually get to sling webs just like Spider-Man. This is an attraction that’s for the entire family. There’s no height requirement on this. This is something where guests of all ages get to live out that epic action, which is wonderful.”
He continues to explain the thrilling technical milestones of the attraction, too.
“60 times a second we are able to determine where a guest’s head is, their shoulders, their elbows, and even their wrists. We’re able to track the motion of your body so that when you reach out and sling a web, since we know where your eyes are and we know where your hands are, we can render a virtual web coming right out of the palm of your hand, right out of your virtual web shooters and into a virtual world.”
Are you looking forward to the upcoming Avengers Campus? We’re sure it’ll be a smash hit for Disneyland Resort!
