Disney Chief talks studio reorganization with plans for the company to be more aggressive in offering some new theatrical titles via Disney Plus using the paid download, similar to “Mulan” according to Variety.
With many theatres/ cinemas remaining shut across the US and over the World because of COVID-19. In September Disney opted to make “Mulan” a paid download via Disney Plus for $29.99, as a paid add-on for subscribers. Disney CEO Bob Chapek said that if there was enough interest with the “Premier Access” scheme like “Mulan” to possibly release further releases like this.
Whilst “Mulan” stirred some controversy over where parts of the film was filmed, in that some of the shotting was done in Xinjiang, a province home to a large Muslim population that faced oppression from the State. Prior to the controversy Bob Chapek remarked that the film saw “very positive results” and that the “Premier Access” strategy is definitely an option for further release. He then hinted that more details about this would be shared on the 10th December, when Disney holds an Investor Day presentation on its streaming strategy.
There was also some reorganization last month of Disney’s content and distribution operations, with the aim to further focus on content creation for Disney Plus as well as other emerging direct-to-consumer platforms. According to Bob Chapek, he said that Disney have now “separated out roles to what people do best- content does what they do best and same with distribution”, which makes it sound like the two roles have separated into different entities enabling Disney content creatives to be free and do “what they do best” which is to “make the best content and storytelling possible” . Apparently distribution will set “parameters for our annual long-term budget framework”.
Disney also created a new Studios unit for its film operations named General Entertainment, which includes other TV networks other than ESPN and related productions. This reorganisation is designed to “shake up the status quo” which all studios have had to face due to COVID-19.
So overall, Disney chief talks studio reorganization focusing on Disney plus and the possibility of bringing new Disney movies right to our screens so we don’t have to wait ages for future releases! For other Disney news click here!
