It is being reported that Disney has recently changed the bread in the Tonga Toast and Disney Addicts are not happy!

If you have never had the chance to try the Tonga Toast from the Kona Cafe or Captain Cooks in the Polynesian Resort you don’t know what you are missing! Tonga Toast is thick-cut Sourdough Bread stuffed with bananas before being deep fried and rolled in Cinnamon Sugar. I highlighted Sourdough Bread as that is the main ingredient of the dish…

Recently Disney has opted out of using the Sourdough bread in a cost cutting measure and is now using a French Bread from a new bread supplier. Many fans online do not like the change and say it changes the overall texture, taste, and consistency of the dish.

No word on if Disney plans on going back to Sourdough bread but like when Disney made a change years ago with the bread pudding at ‘Ohana fan outcry forced Disney to change it back.

If you want to attempt to make your own Tonga Toast at home check out our recipe here, just make sure to use Sourdough Bread 😉

  1. Cost cutting? I’m a huge Disney fan. We have annual passes and go twice a year, but the cost of everything is going up and up. I don’t really understand why they need to take cost cutting measures. I know Tonga toast is a huge favorite among many, and I don’t understand why they would change something so many people love. I hate to see what is next on the list to be changed. Sad.

  2. Yes, I just had it a week ago on my last day of my vacation. It was like a half a brick in size, burnt on one end and very hard to cut unless you used your knife and they had squeezed in some mushed banana filling into just the center and only the center nothing around the edges. There was not much filling either maybe a tablespoon or so. I could hardly find it.

  3. This isn’t the first time they have changed this recipe. I remember having the Tonga Toast over 20 years ago. It was not as thick and in my opinion was much better. Last fall I made a special trip over to the Polynesian just to have this for breakfast, and I was disappointed. I can make it better at home.
