Disney+ Beats HBO Max in App Downloads for Christmas Day Releases. Both Disney-Pixar and Warner Bros. released new titles on Christmas Day. Warner Bros. released Wonder Woman 1984 on both digital and in theaters and Disney-Pixar opted for a Disney+ exclusively digital premiere for their new animated movie, Soul.
Both Disney+ and HBO Max saw a significant increase in app downloads over the holiday, Disney+ outpaced HBO Max nearly 500% in new downloads for their respective streaming apps. HBO Max shared a record a spike in downloads upwards of 554,000 new downloads for their services, while Disney+ reportedly gained over 2.3 million app users over the same holiday weekend.
A huge factor in this downloading gap is that HBO Max is currently only available in the United States, while Disney+ is available in several global markets. Though theater numbers are low, there is always the additional factor that Wonder Woman 1984 was released via digital AND in theaters, so just remember that this data only shares the success rates of the apps, and isn’t a direct reflection of the films performances.
