The classic attraction is scheduled to close on August 8, 2026, before materializing once again on August 21, 2026, as Haunted Mansion Holiday. This fan-favorite The Nightmare Before Christmas overlay officially kicks off Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort and will keep spreading its delightfully spooky cheer all the way through the winter holidays.
The official August 21 reopening is locked in on Disney’s website, aligning perfectly with the grand debut of Halloween Time 2026. If you want to experience the traditional mortal version of the Haunted Mansion before the transformation begins, your window of opportunity is closing fast. Once Jack Skellington and his crew move in, the classic attraction won’t materialize again until early next year.
Each late summer, Disney temporarily closes the Haunted Mansion for roughly two weeks to install its elaborate Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay. Far from a traditional maintenance refurbishment, this is a massive seasonal transformation that introduces hundreds of custom props, specialized lighting, updated audio tracks, and animated figures to prepare the attraction for its festive holiday run.
The 2026 installation window spans 13 days—from the August 8 closure to the August 21 grand reopening—fitting perfectly within the 10-to-14-day timeline these complex overlays usually demand. A similar mirror-image closure occurs every winter, typically in early-to-mid January, when the mansion temporarily closes its doors again to remove the holiday decorations and restore the classic mansion experience. For reference, last season’s post-holiday restoration took place from January 12 through January 22.
The Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay completely transforms the 999 happy haunts’ New Orleans Square estate, blending two beloved seasons into a whimsical collision inspired by Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. The story follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, who stumbles upon the mansion and decides to give it his own chaotic “Sandy Claws” makeover, bringing Sally, Zero, Oogie Boogie, and the rest of Halloween Town along for the festive ride.
This elaborate overlay reimagines nearly every classic scene. Zero floats in place of the usual floating candelabra down the endless hallway, Madame Leota recites a macabre version of the 13 Days of Christmas, the graveyard gets blanketed in roughly 7,500 square feet of “ghostly white snow,” and a final showdown with Oogie Boogie caps off the adventure. Over two dozen festive animated figures materialize for the season, including man-eating wreaths and a vampire teddy bear.
The exterior is equally spectacular. The historic facade is adorned with hundreds of candles, glowing jack-o’-lanterns, festive garlands, a towering Sandy Claws Jack, and a giant countdown clock—creating one of the most stunning, photogenic nighttime spots in the entire park.
