Carl Weathers, Star of Rocky and the Mandalorian Dies at 76

Carl Weathers, renowned for portraying Apollo Creed in the initial four “Rocky” films alongside Sylvester Stallone, passed away on Thursday at the age of 76, as confirmed by his manager Matt Luber to Variety.

In addition to his iconic role in the “Rocky” franchise, Weathers made a notable appearance in the 1987 film “Predator” and played a memorable character in Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore.” His diverse career included a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his contribution to the “Star Wars” series, “The Mandalorian.”

Weathers also lent his voice to the character Combat Carl in “Toy Story 4” and portrayed a fictionalized version of himself in a recurring role on the TV series “Arrested Development.” His extensive filmography encompasses various projects, including TV series like “Street Justice,” “Colony,” “The Shield,” “Chicago Justice,” and “Brothers,” as well as films such as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Death Hunt,” and “The Comebacks.”

Star Wars shared a heartfelt message via their social media, praising the actor for his contributions to a galaxy far far away. “Carl Weathers, forever a member of the Lucasfilm family, died Thursday. He was 76. With the launch of The Mandalorian on Disney+, Weathers joined the galaxy far, far away as Greef Karga — an expeditor for the Bounty Hunter Guild who rises to become Magistrate of Nevarro, and ally to the Mandalorian and Grogu.

“He would receive an Emmy Award nomination for his efforts. In addition, Weathers stepped into the director’s chair for the critically acclaimed episodes “Chapter 12: The Siege” and “Chapter 20: The Foundling.”We’ll miss you, Carl. Be peace.”

Weathers will be fondly remembered for his diverse array of characters spanning decades of film and television. He is survived by his ex-wife Mary Ann and two sons.
