Broadway Theaters to Remain Dark Through Spring 2021

Broadway Theaters to Remain Dark Through Spring 2021. On March 12, 2020 Broadway theaters went dark due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, theaters have yet to reopen, and for a time it appeared we may get the curtain to rise again at the beginning of the new year. Unfortunately for theater fans, the Broadway League has announced Broadway theaters will remain closed through Spring 2021, with a tentative reopening date to be announced sometime before May 30, 2021.

Broadway World shared the news stating, “The Broadway League has announced another extension of the Broadway shutdown in New York City, through May 30, 2021. Dates for each returning and new Broadway show will be announced as individual productions determine the performance schedules for their respective shows. Those who have tickets for dates through May 30, 2021 should contact their point of purchase for details about exchanges and refunds.”

President of the Broadway League Charlotte St. Martin shared, “With nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of $14.8 billion to the city, our membership is committed to re-opening as soon as conditions permit us to do so. We are working tirelessly with multiple partners on sustaining the industry once we raise our curtains again.”

Currently, Disney has two shows remaining on Broadway, Aladdin and The Lion King, once theaters reopen, but had made the decision to cancel Frozen earlier this year to make way for a new musical. The most likely replacement being Hercules which has been reimagined for the stage by famed composer Alan Menken.
