I received “The Lion King” Diamond Edition in the mail for review on Friday and literally couldn’t wait to turn it on. Here is the official word on the release of the classic Disney hit!
“‘The Lion King’ is the best-selling home entertainment release of all time – and this is ‘The Lion King’ like never before,” said Bob Chapek, president of distribution, The Walt Disney Studios. The Blu-ray marks the first time “The Lion King” has been available in any form since 2004. Featuring pristine high definition picture and sound, the Blu-ray creates an incredible at-home experience with a host of picture and sound enhancements, interactive features and bonus content, including a new set of hilarious animated bloopers.
Beginning October 4th, “The Lion King” Diamond Edition home entertainment release will be availabe from the Disney Vault in 2 Disc, 4 Disc, or as an 8 Disc trilogy. The one-disc DVD Edition will be available on November 15th.
Immediately, I finally understood the point of the re-release and of Blu-Ray all together. The movie is even more stunning than I could have possible imagined. Even just the main title screen was breathtakingly beautiful and the opening scenes could make you forget that this movie is 17 years old. Just before the announcement of this new release, we had found a copy of the 10 year “special edition” on e-bay to add to our Disney collection. Watching that DVD was great, but the images showed the movie’s age. Compared to our standard today, it definitely looked old and also had an annoying addition of “The Morning Report,” an originally deleted song by Zazu that was readded for that edition.
Luckily, in the new Diamond Edition, the song is in a special feature only, leaving the scene unaltered. Speaking of special features, “The Lion King” Diamond Edition also includes several special features, including “Second Screen” in which you can download an app for your ipad or laptop and, while watching the movie, have the 2 sync together so you can see special footage and learn the behind-the-scenes extras. Unfortunately, being before the official release, I couldn’t get into Second Screen, but I’m excited to try it out! I did, however, get to watch several behind-the-scenes interviews with animators, watching how they put together the movie and learning more about the audition process as well as the collaboration with Elton John. There are behind-the-scenes interviews with the animators, extended bloopers, deleted scenes, and you can even watch the movie with a “sing-along” mode!
