Prepare for More Mel Brooks: Pullman and Moranis Confirmed for Spaceballs 2

Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are officially reprising their iconic roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, respectively, in the upcoming Spaceballs movie from Amazon MGM Studios. According to Deadline, Keke Palmer (One of Them Days) is also joining the cast.

Amazon has not yet commented on the new Spaceballs film, and details about Keke Palmer’s role and the sequel’s plot are being kept under wraps. Lewis Pullman, Bill Pullman’s son and a rising star from Thunderbolts, has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role, a detail first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The return of Rick Moranis is especially notable, given his decades-long absence from the screen. As announced this morning, original director and star Mel Brooks will also be back, reprising his role as Yogurt. The film, slated for a 2027 theatrical release, has been humorously described by early, unscripted reports as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) is set to direct the Spaceballs sequel, working from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad—a collaboration first announced last June. Gad is also expected to star and will produce alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, as well as Mel Brooks and Greenbaum. Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez will serve as executive producers.

The original Spaceballs, released by MGM in 1987, is a beloved parody of the sci-fi genre, drawing inspiration from Star Wars and other classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey. The story follows the nefarious Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks) as they try to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia. Their plans are, of course, foiled by the heroic Lone Starr (Pullman), his loyal sidekick Barf (John Candy), and the spirited Druish princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). The cast also featured Joan Rivers and Dick Van Patten. While the film grossed just over $38.1 million worldwide, it has since achieved cult classic status and remains a favorite among fans.

Bill Pullman, recognized for his roles in classics like Independence Day and David Lynch’s Lost Highway, has recently starred in series such as The Sinner and films including The High Note and Dark Waters. Looking ahead, he’s set to appear in the Duffer Brothers’ Netflix series The Boroughs and A24’s Famous, opposite Zac Efron, among other projects.

An icon of the ’80s and ’90s, Rick Moranis achieved fame with roles in Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, and the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise, following his earlier work writing and starring in the acclaimed Canadian sketch series SCTV. Moranis largely stepped away from acting in the late ’90s to focus on raising his children after the passing of his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky. His most recent appearance was alongside Ryan Reynolds in a 2020 ad for Mint Mobile.
