Disney Teases Big Thunder Mountain Refurb with Behind-the-Scenes Look
Hold onto your hard hats, partners—Disney just dropped a behind-the-scenes gold nugget of an update on the massive Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment at Magic Kingdom, and we’re already yelling “yeehaw!” with excitement.
Posted to the official @WaltDisneyImagineering Instagram and YouTube accounts, the new video gives fans a rare glimpse into the day-in-the-life of an Imagineer currently working on the wildest ride in the wilderness. The star of the sneak peek is Imagineer Nathaniel, who guides us through team meetings with engineers, artists, graphic designers, and producers—all coming together to breathe new life into this Frontierland classic.

🔧 What’s in the Works?
In the video, we catch a look at brand-new ride track being installed (shiny rails = smoother thrills), concept discussions about show scenes and updated elements, and even a site walkthrough with Imagineers on-location. Nathaniel emphasizes how much of this process is deeply collaborative—blending storytelling with cutting-edge tech. And yes, while a lot was shared, there was also a cheeky tease about “projects we can’t show… yet.”

Sorry, fans hoping for a soft opening surprise—Big Thunder Mountain Railroad isn’t expected to reopen until sometime in 2026, meaning we’ve still got a bit of a wait before boarding those runaway mine trains again.
But if this peek is any indication, Disney’s gearing up to deliver a refresh worthy of the ride’s legendary status. Whether it’s smoother thrills, enhanced effects, or some surprises still under wraps, one thing’s for sure: Frontierland’s about to get thunderstruck.
