‘Avatar’ Beats Out ‘Avengers: Endgame’ After Surprise Return to Theaters in China. James Cameron surprised Chinese Theatergoers with a surprise rerelease of the 2009 hit film, Avatar. China’s Film Bureau approved the rerelease to help promote the reopening of movie theaters across the country, as well as the added benefit of pushing Avatar back into the highest grossing film of all time. The record had been held by Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame since the end of 2019. After the first night of the theatrical rerelease, Avatar has earned $2,798,579,794 globally, beating out Endgame which currently sits at $2,979,501,328.
Avatar is not the first hit film to return to theaters to promote audience attendance after the pandemic. Classic films such as the original Star Wars Trilogy, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future I, II, and III, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, E.T., Jaws, The Avengers, and more have been featured to draw in social distancing crowds to the movies.
