Are More First Run Movies Coming to Disney+ Premier Access? Disney recently made an historical announcement about the live-action remake of the animated classic, Mulan. Mulan will be the first title to premier on Disney+’s new Premier Access feature. The film will premiere via Disney+ on September 4th, will cost $29.99 USD and will last as long as subscribers keep their Disney+ account.
According to Disney,”Once you have Premier Access to Mulan, you can watch [the film] as many times as you want on any platform where Disney+ is available.. Your Access to Mulan will continue as long as you are an active Disney+ subscriber.” So what does this mean for future movie titles?
Mulan is not the only upcoming Disney movie plagued by premiere delays. Other Disney films such as Marvel’s Black Widow, Disney’s The Jungle Cruise, and more, have been delayed months, even years, from the intended release date. Some films were pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic and others for over-saturatation of the industry after Disney’s acquisition of Fox Studios.
Newly appointed Disney CEO, Bob Chapek, has shared that Mulan is a test for Disney to see if Premier Access is the way to go with new films on the streaming service. Stating, “[Disney will] have a chance to learn from this and to see whether [Premier Access] makes sense.”
It is currently unknown which titles will join Mulan on Disney+ Premier Access, but the company has stated they intend for other movies to follow suit. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for updates on Premier Access and all things Disney+!
