iPhone App Review: Spy Queue

I’ve got to say,  Brett Rounsaville’s Spy Queue app is a lot of fun. It’s one part “I, spy…”, one part trivia book, and just a lot of fun to do. The app is based around Disneyland, and focuses on making your waits in line a lot easier, and a lot more fun, while also teaching you things you may not know, and being a map for park visitors who need one.

The official description for the product is this:

One part guide book and one part Disneyland-wide game of hide and seek!

Tired of standing in line with nothing to do?

Spy Queue gives you close up images of props and decor in the lines of the most popular attractions at Disneyland. While away the time looking for these hidden gems and when you find them you’ll be rewarded with a little known fact about the attraction or the surrounding land!

Great for kids who need something to do, but even more fun for grown-ups with an interest in the history of the happiest place on Earth and a sense of adventure!

The app was created by former Disney CM Brett Rounsaville. I’ve had the chance to talk to him over the past few weeks, and when I asked him what his inspiration to make this application was, he had this to say:

A lot of time went into it. It mostly came out of hating waiting in lines. As a cast member you get used to being able to wander into the parks whenever you feel like it and just never going in if you think there’s going to be a crowd. But sometimes, when you want to bring friends in you don’t have a choice. As a Park Decorator and all around Disney nerd I’d kill time by pointing out fun props and telling stories about the history to my friends, but sometimes people would overhear and get sucked in and I realized that was an experience that people might actually like to have that could be easily offered. But, of course, that was six years ago so the idea had plenty of time to ferment. I left Disney in 2007 to do my own thing and last year finally decided it was time to make a move!

The great thing for Brett is, his enthusiasm has really paid off. This app really does make the waits in line more fun and exciting. I’ve been a consistent Disneyland visitor for years, and during some of the busier times, the waits in line can seem like forever. But with Spy Queue, he’s made your wait interactive. The and the app is laid out by land, and then by ride.

Each ride has some different pictures, and as you’re in line, you look for exactly what that picture shows you. Once you find said item, you’ll get some cool trivia about the ride and that specific item. It’s really a lot of fun. On top of that, the app also has a built in map of the park, so for anyone who might get turned around, you can look at the map and find your way around the park. It’s really well done.
One of the coolest things in Spy Queue though is the park wide feature. It’s like a lottery spinner, and it really makes it a lot of fun. You spin the wheel, and get three things to look for. Things like family on a blanket, honeymooning couple, and someone wearing a visor. So you find all three, spin again, and you’re off to the races once more. This app is like the ultimate eye spy of the Disneyland park, and I for one had a blast using it. I’d love to see a second app for California Adventure, or even an update in the future. So maybe, just maybe, if I hold out hope, Brett will be able to make one of those as well. Here’s hoping!

Spy Queue  is definitely worth a purchase if you frequent Disneyland and want to find a way to the pass the time while in line. You can currently purchase it through iTunes for $1.99, and it’s absolutely worth the price! This will entertain yourself, your friends, and your kids for hours.
