Aladdin‘ Flying High With Top Spot In Memorial Day Weekend Box Office. The highly anticipated Live-Action film has been charming audiences world wide and seems to have broken the Memorial Day Weekend curse on Disney movies.

According to Forbes, Aladdin has earned approximately $86 million in the domestic box office in sales just from Friday-Sunday, and is projected to reach $105 million through the holiday weekend. With the addition of the $121 million opening overseas, the film has garnished over $207 million globally for the opening weekend.

In its opening weekend, Aladdin has surpassed the cost of production, which was $183 million, and is expected to make at least three times the cost of the film while in its run in theaters.

As for the normal Memorial Day weekend curse, some other titles by Disney who met with ill-timed releases were:

  • Prince of Persia
  • Alice Through The Looking Glass
  • Tomorrowland
  • Solo: A Star Wars Story

The common thread was the weekend of release. One factor in the performance of films released on Memorial Day weekend is the anticipation for major films with set summer release dates, such as Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 2) and Toy Story 4 (June 21), both set to premiere in Summer 2019.

Aladdin stars Mena Massoud (Aladdin) Naomi Scott (Jasmine), Will Smith (Genie), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), and David Negahban (Sultan).

Only time will tell if Aladdin will continue to perform well in theaters, or if the film has already managed to garnish as much as it can in a theatrical release, like most films with similar release dates.

Did you see Aladdin during opening weekend? Do you plan to see it soon? Without spoiling the film for others, what were your thoughts? Will you go see the film again in theaters? We would love to hear about your experience in the comments!
