Disney Debuts First Concept Art for DCA’s New Avatar Boat Ride

Exciting news for fans awaiting the expansion of Pandora at Disneyland Resort! New concept art has surfaced, offering a look into the immersive Avatar attraction coming to Disney California Adventure.

Shared by Dylan Cole—co-production designer for the Avatar film franchise—the newly released artwork showcases a large, multi-row boat floating through a breathtaking, glowing bioluminescent landscape. Unlike Na’vi River Journey at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, this new attraction is slated to feature outdoor elements, with walkways visible in the artwork where park guests can watch the boats drift past lush, alien flora and cascading waterfalls.

According to Cole, the core philosophy behind designing Pandora relies on treating the alien world with the reality of a nature documentary rather than typical, far-fetched science fiction. By grounding the designs in “science fact,” Imagineers and designers aim to create a rich, tactile experience that feels physically authentic to riders.

While Disney has previously showcased physical models and vehicle maquettes for the expansion, official timeline adjustments have been made regarding the land’s placement within DCA’s ongoing development:

• Monsters, Inc. Extension: Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!, which was originally scheduled to close in early 2026 to clear room for construction, will now remain open into 2027.
• Priorities Shift: Walt Disney Imagineering is prioritizing the comprehensive reimagining of Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park before full-scale construction heavily ramps up for the Avatar land.

Even with the shifted timeline, this stunning new artwork gives fans plenty to look forward to as Pandora makes its mark on the West Coast.
