Disney Expands AI Investment Across Pixar, ILM and Imagineering While Cutting Costs Companywide

The Walt Disney Company is putting more resources behind artificial intelligence and machine learning, with some of its biggest creative and technology teams now part of that push. In a new filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Disney pointed to Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic, Disney Research Studios, and Walt Disney Imagineering as teams where the company is investing in AI capabilities, while stressing that its approach is intended to keep people at the center of the creative process.

Disney says it has worked with AI and machine learning technology for decades, but the tools are becoming an increasingly important part of how the company develops new experiences. One of the clearest examples can already be found at Walt Disney Imagineering. Earlier this year, Disney rolled out its J.A.R.V.I.S. AI tool to more than 2,000 Imagineers, giving them a new way to tap into more than 70 years of Imagineering knowledge. Disney is also using AI-powered digital twins and simulation technology to help design and test attractions before they are built, including work connected to the upcoming Disney theme park destination in Abu Dhabi.

While Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic were specifically named among Disney’s AI investments, the filing did not detail individual AI tools currently being used by either studio. Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro has said the technology is being explored for pre-production and post-production work. Disney maintains that AI is not simply being viewed as a way to become more efficient, describing its creative approach as one that will remain human-centered, artist-driven, and creator-led.

That distinction is especially notable as Disney continues looking for ways to reduce expenses across the company. In the same filing, Disney said it remains focused on reducing costs to create additional room for investment and is evaluating measures that include reductions in labor and selling, general, and administrative expenses. The filing reported $88 million in severance costs for the quarter and $180 million over the first nine months of the fiscal year, although those figures were grouped together with other charges in Disney’s financial tables.

The AI investment also comes following job reductions at Pixar earlier this year as the animation studio shifted its focus back toward theatrical releases, adding another layer to the conversation surrounding how artificial intelligence could eventually affect Disney’s creative workforce. Disney has also established an internal Office of Technological Enablement to oversee the company’s use and development of emerging technology.

For theme park fans, Imagineering may be where Disney’s expanding AI strategy becomes the most visible. From virtually testing attractions to digging through decades of Imagineering history, these tools could increasingly influence how future Disney parks and attractions move from an idea on a screen to something guests can actually experience.
