Disney+ Could Introduce a Free Viewing Tier as Disney Explores New Streaming Strategy
Watching Disney+ without a monthly subscription could someday become a reality. According to a new report, Disney is exploring the idea of offering a free tier on Disney+, giving viewers access to select content without paying for a subscription.

The discussions were reportedly shared during an internal streaming town hall led by Disney’s product and technology chief, Adam Smith. While no timeline or specific details have been announced, the reported plan would allow some Disney+ content to be available outside the traditional paywall. Disney has not officially confirmed that a free tier is coming, but sources say the idea is part of broader conversations about expanding access to the streaming service.
The move comes as free streaming platforms continue to gain momentum. Services like YouTube, Tubi, and The Roku Channel have seen significant growth as viewers increasingly look for free entertainment options, especially as subscription prices continue to climb. Currently, Disney+ starts at $12.99 per month with ads or $19.99 per month without ads when bundled with Hulu.
A free tier could also help Disney introduce new viewers to its biggest franchises before encouraging them to subscribe for full access. Imagine being able to sample episodes from popular series, watch select Disney movies, or enjoy exclusive clips from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney Animation without needing a paid account. While exactly what would be included remains unknown, the strategy could mirror how other streaming services offer a limited taste of their libraries.

Disney has also been experimenting with new ways to keep audiences engaged. The company recently added vertical video clips to Disney+, similar to social media platforms, and CEO Josh D’Amaro has emphasized product and technology innovation as a key focus for the company’s streaming future. A free viewing option would be another major step in that evolution.
For now, Disney fans will have to wait and see if these discussions become reality. If a free tier launches, it could make Disney+ more accessible than ever while giving millions of potential viewers an easy way to jump into the magic before deciding whether to subscribe.
