Monsters Inc. Ride at California Adventure to Exit for New Avatar Experience
It’s time to say a “monstrous” goodbye as Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! is officially slated for removal to make room for the highly anticipated Avatar-themed land. Recent demolition permits filed by Disney have confirmed that the journey through Monstropolis is nearing its end, signaling a major shift for the Hollywood Land area of Disney California Adventure.

The news comes more than a year after the massive announcement from the D23 Fan Event, where Disney shared plans for a brand-new land inspired by the world of Pandora. While initial speculation centered on where the expansion would land, the new permits indicate that the infrastructure currently housing the CDA and the residents of Monstropolis will be the site for this next-generation experience.
The new Avatar destination is expected to be an entirely new story, separate from what guests experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida. This West Coast version of Pandora will focus on the “innovative” and “breathtaking” scale of the Avatar sequels, bringing the bioluminescent beauty and high-stakes adventure of the films to life in a way that fits the unique atmosphere of the Anaheim resort.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! has been a staple of the park since it opened in early 2006, replacing the short-lived Superstar Limo. Fans have long enjoyed the ride’s practical effects, the “smell” of ginger in the sushi scene, and, of course, the interactive finale where Roz offers her final (often sarcastic) words to guests as they exit.
While it is always bittersweet to see a favorite attraction retire, the scale of the Avatar project promises to be a “sensational” addition to the park’s skyline. Disney has not yet released a final “last day” for the attraction, but with permits moving forward, fans of Mike and Sulley should make it a priority to visit the “scare floor” one last time before the demolition begins.
The removal of the Monsters, Inc. building suggests that the Avatar expansion will be a massive undertaking, likely reshaping the back corner of Hollywood Land. As construction moves into the next phase, we expect more details regarding the specific attractions, dining, and shopping that will make up this immersive new world.
Stay tuned as we continue to track the construction progress and watch for official closing date announcements!
