Imagineering Reveals the Secret Sauce Behind Buzz Lightyear’s New Space Ranger Spin Blaster Sounds

There is a new little detail hiding in plain sound at Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and it is delightfully toy-tastic. Walt Disney Imagineering has shared a behind-the-scenes look at the updated sound design for the Magic Kingdom attraction’s revamped blasters, revealing that one of the key ingredients in that fresh “pew pew” effect is something straight out of Andy’s toy box: a slinky.

According to Imagineering, the sound team used the audio of a suspended toy slinky being struck as part of the base for the new blaster effect. That sound was then digitally adjusted and layered with other audio elements to create the final effect guests now hear when firing the updated handheld blasters on the ride. It is a clever nod to the Toy Story world that inspired Buzz in the first place, and one that gives the attraction’s refresh an extra bit of playful personality.

The attraction also features a separate success sound when riders hit one of the glowing targets, with even more layered audio used to create that brighter, punchier effect. It is a small change, but one that adds a lot to the overall feel of the ride and helps make the updated Space Ranger Spin experience feel a little more immersive, a little more satisfying, and a lot more cosmic.
