Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Strikes Gold with New Signage Coming to Magic Kingdom
The wildest ride in the wilderness is getting a little extra sparkle before it thunders back into action! A new permit filing from Walt Disney Imagineering reveals that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will debut refreshed signage as part of its massive refurbishment at Magic Kingdom. And if this update is anything like the rest of the project, Frontierland’s iconic mine train is about to look shinier than a freshly struck gold nugget.

According to the permit, signage work will be handled by Design Communications Ltd., a frequent collaborator with Disney on park-wide updates. While new signs might sound like a small detail, it is another clue that this refurbishment is a full top-to-bottom glow-up. Disney has already teased that the project goes “mountain-top to cavern-deep,” including brand-new ride vehicles, refreshed animatronics, and restored effects throughout the attraction. In other words, Big Thunder is not just getting a tune-up; it is getting a full-on prospector’s polish.

And speaking of polish, new concept details continue to trickle in. Guests can expect a brand-new Rainbow Caverns scene filled with glowing pools and shimmering rock formations, plus something Magic Kingdom has never seen before on this attraction… actual gold embedded into the mountain itself. It is a small detail with big storytelling payoff, adding even more legend to the runaway mine train’s wild tale.
