Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ Jumps to #1 With Biggest Original Debut Since ‘Coco’

After a challenging string of original releases that struggled to find their footing, Pixar has officially regained its stride. Hoppers didn’t just meet expectations—it leaped past them, dominating the weekend box office and proving the studio still has the magic touch for new stories.

Following a massive marketing blitz—headlined by a high-profile Super Bowl spot and even a custom Yogurtland flavor—Hoppers made its theatrical debut on March 6, 2026. The film introduces audiences to Mabel, a teenage environmentalist who uses cutting-edge tech to “hop” her consciousness into a robotic beaver in a high-stakes mission to save the wilderness from industrial development.

Hoppers has leaped to the top of the box office, making it a certified smash with a 94% critic score and a matching 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. By Sunday, March 8, the film brought in a stellar $46 million domestically and $88 million worldwide. This #1 debut marks the strongest opening for a Pixar original—and original animated films in general—since 2017’s Coco. Thanks to incredible word-of-mouth, Hoppers has already jumped past its initial $40 million projections!

This victory is a major turnaround for Pixar’s original slate. While recent entries struggled—with 2023’s Elemental having one of the studio’s lowest openings and 2025’s Elio unfortunately falling short as the studio’s lowest performer—Hoppers has proved that new stories still have massive drawing power. While Elio struggled to find its footing, Elemental eventually found success as a sleeper hit on Disney+, setting the stage for Hoppers to reclaim the theatrical throne.
