In a move that has fans cheering, Blanchett will be reprising her role as Valka, Hiccup’s long-lost mother and fierce dragon protector. This marks the second time a major original voice actor has made the leap to the live-action franchise, following in the footsteps of Gerard Butler, who returned as Stoick the Vast.

Blanchett originally voiced the character in the 2014 animated sequel and 2019’s The Hidden World. Her return adds incredible star power to a cast that already includes Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid. The sequel will once again be guided by Dean DeBlois, the creative visionary behind the entire animated trilogy and the first live-action film.

Following the massive box office success of the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon—which earned over $630 million last year—Universal is wasting no time. Production is expected to begin later this year, with the sequel currently soaring toward a theatrical release date of June 11, 2027.

Are you excited to see Cate Blanchett bring Valka to life on the big screen?
