Spaceship Earth Closing for Refurbishment in August — But GEO-82 Bar Will Stay Open During Construction
The time-traveling journey through human communication is about to hit the pause button. Walt Disney Imagineering has officially filed a new construction permit for Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, signaling the start of a scheduled refurbishment. Starting August 25, 2025, the beloved geodesic icon will temporarily close for routine maintenance, with plans to reopen later this year — although a reopening date has yet to be announced.

According to the Notice of Commencement, the permit is for “general construction” at 2060 Avenue of the Stars (that’s EPCOT’s official address, not the site of a sci-fi TV show), and the work is contracted to Engineering Design Solutions. As is typical for Disney construction permits, the expiration date is set a year out — June 30, 2026 — although the refurbishment is expected to wrap far sooner than that.
While we won’t be gliding through history inside that shimmering silver sphere for a bit, there’s a silver lining: GEO-82, the sleek new bar tucked behind Spaceship Earth, will remain open throughout the refurbishment. The bar, located in the former Siemens VIP lounge attached to Project Tomorrow, has been earning high marks from EPCOT’s adult beverage crowd. With moody lighting, out-of-this-world theming, and a menu full of cleverly named cocktails, it’s the perfect place to toast to progress — or sip your way through the downtime.

If you haven’t experienced GEO-82 yet, now’s your chance. It’s one part 80s retro-futurism, one part intergalactic glam, and 100% EPCOT vibes. Just remember: while the attraction is closed, the drinks still flow!
And if you’re already feeling nostalgic for the dulcet tones of Dame Judi Dench, WDWNT has you covered with a full 4K multicam POV ride-through of Spaceship Earth — perfect for your next living room staycation.
We’ll keep our eyes on the stars (and the construction walls) for updates on the reopening timeline. Until then, grab a drink at GEO-82 and raise a glass to the past, present, and future!
