Disney Hosts 1,000 Kids for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson at Typhoon Lagoon
Typhoon Lagoon was flooded with fun and learning recently as Walt Disney World hosted The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, welcoming 1,000 students from seven Florida nonprofit organizations for a day of life-saving lessons, community connection, and magical memories. The event, put on by the World Waterpark Association, spans thousands of sites globally each year, but once again, Disney made the biggest splash as the largest participating location.

The wave-making event brought together kids from Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, Girl Scouts of Citrus, Alianza Center, Foundation for Foster Children, ELEVATE Orlando, PACE Center for Girls, and Boys & Girls Clubs. For many of the young participants, this was not just their first swimming lesson—it was their very first time in a water park.
Guided by more than 50 highly trained Disney lifeguards, with support from 40 Disney VoluntEARS, students learned critical swim safety skills with plenty of encouragement (and high-fives) from special guests like Mickey Mouse and Stitch. That’s right, two of Disney’s most water-loving characters joined the fun to cheer on the kids and help turn safety into a splash-tastic celebration.

“Hosting an event like this gives our cast members the chance to not only connect with the kids in our community, but to share something they’re knowledgeable and passionate about,” said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, Director of External Affairs at Disney World. “Helping kids pair that skills-based learning with the fun of our water parks creates memories and moments that will stick with them forever.”
After the official lesson wrapped, the students were treated to a full day of Typhoon Lagoon fun: surfing the waves, floating the lazy river, and soaking up the sun alongside their friends and mentors. For many, this field trip was the highlight of their summer.

“We’re in Florida, so there’s water everywhere, and it’s really important for the kids to know how to swim,” said Natasha Yeung, Youth Program Supervisor for Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. “For most of our kids, this is their favorite field trip of the year. They love being able to experience this with all of their really close friends, and then also getting to meet characters like Mickey and Stitch.”
This event is just one way Disney is diving into community support this summer. Coming up next? Walt Disney World’s annual Back-to-School Supply Drive will be kicking off soon to help local families prepare for the academic year.

And the fun doesn’t stop there; both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are open this summer, giving families even more ways to stay cool and safe. Plus, guests staying at select Disney Resort hotels can take the plunge with free water park admission on the day they check in.
