Capturing Disney in Pictures: 6th Day of Christmas at Wilderness Lodge

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 6th Day of Christmas at Wilderness Lodge
Christmas tree at Wilderness Lodge

Every photo has a story.

Consistently rated as one of the top authentic-themed lodgings in Orlando, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort is like stepping straight into the Old West.  Tall pines, thick forest, and a 450-acre lake all add to the feeling that you have left sunny Florida and magically traveled to Yellowstone National Park’s Old Faithful Inn, one of several rustic landmarks used as inspiration for Wilderness Lodge.  You are traveling using magic -Disney Magic!

Picture this…during the Christmas holidays, Wilderness Lodge’s soaring six-story lobby is decked out for the season with festive wreaths and garlands.  A 60-foot Christmas tree adorned with nature-themed decorations and 60,000 twinkling lights are the focal highlight of the Lodge’s holiday décor.  Take a seat in one of the rocking chairs by the 80-foot-tall fireplace, which depicts a built-to-scale replica of the Grand Canyon’s rock layers.  Warm your hands by the fire, and look around the gift shop in an equally warm and cozy shopping environment.

Wilderness Lodge has five restaurants that offer everything from fine dining to quick counter-service snacks from breakfast through dinner.  Grab a bite to eat, and head outside to take in some of the Rocky Mountain ambience.

Follow the path… along the man-made Silver Creek, stroll down to Fire Rock Geyser. Located in-between the shores of Bay Lake and the Silver Creek Springs pool, Fire Rock Geyser is a Disney-created artificial geyser controlled by computer.  Stick around for a while and you’ll witness the water shooting 120 feet into the air.  Fire Rock Geyser is fashioned after Yellowstone National Park’s famous geyser, Old Faithful.  The geyser erupts every hour, on the hour, from early morning to 10 p.m.

Grab a snack… take a seat at one of the many tables just outside Roaring Fork quick service dining, and wait for the geyser show.  You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the Rocky Mountains of the great old west, only this version is more beautiful, and there’s orchestral music piped in through the rich landscaping.  One quick boat ride, and you’ll be back on the steps of the Magic Kingdom in less than 20 minutes, depending on holiday water traffic.  Bring a camera, because the Florida wilderness views are fantastic.

Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride!

  1. The Wilderness Lodge is like an attraction itself and is often overlooked since you have to make a special effort to get there if you are not fortunate enough to be staying at the Resort. Visiting the Wilderness Lodge should be on the list of every repeat visitor to the Walt Disney World Resort.

Amanda – Love the picture! Wish I was at the Wilderness Lodge this Christmas Season to see it decorated in person.
