We have another Walt Disney World refurbishment alert to share with you. Gertie the Dinosaur, the beloved life-size sculpture at Echo Lake, is getting some much needed TLC. Recently, Gertie’s tail has been wrapped in tarps, likely for refurbishment.

Gertie’s tail sits partly on the beach of Echo Lake, giving the illusion that it’s sticking out of the water behind her body. When the tarps first appeared, parts of the tail were clearly removed. The tarps covered a support structure, but now the tail has been restored. The tarps remain, but the tail looks taller and smoother than before. The tarps are a similar color to Gertie, helping them blend in, but it’s possible the tail’s exterior hasn’t been repainted yet.

Gertie the Dinosaur’s history goes way beyond her 1989 debut at the park. Created by Winsor McCay in 1913, Gertie starred in a 12-minute hand-drawn film and became one of the first well-known animated cartoon stars. She amazed vaudeville audiences in 1914 when she was projected onto a screen, appearing life-sized alongside her creator. Today, she serves delicious treats at Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction, continuing to delight guests of all ages.
