Disney’s ‘Strange World’ Expected to Lose $100 Million in Theatrical Run

It seems likely that “Strange World” will be considered a financial loss for Disney Animation.

According to Variety, ticket sales for “Strange World” now register as one of Disney’s worst opening weekends in modern times, arriving ever-so-slightly ahead of its pandemic-era release “West Side Story” ($10.5 million) and significantly behind fellow family films like “Encanto” ($27.2 million over the traditional weekend and $40 million during the extended Thanksgiving holiday stretch) and “Lightyear” ($51 million).

In fact, analysts estimate that “Strange World” will lose at least $100 million in its theatrical run. Even with future prospects of being added on Disney+ and home entertainment platforms, box office experts suggest it’ll be difficult for the film to be profitable. Since “Strange World” cost $180 million to produce and tens of millions more in global marketing, the film needs to gross roughly $360 million to break even.

At the time of writing, Strange World has received a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 73% by critics and a 60% rating from audiences. The star-studded cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal (Searcher Clade), Alan Tudyk (Narrator, Radio Host 1, Duffle), Dennis Quaid (Jaeger Clade), Jaboukie Young-White (Ethan Clasde), Gabbrielle Union (Meridian Clade), and Lucy Liu (Callisto Mal), but it seems the vocal talent featured in the movie was not enough to save it at the box office.

Strange World struggled to bring in $30 Million over the course of it’s 5-day premiere weekend, which is concerning for Disney given that the reported production budget ranged from $120-130 Million, not counting advertising.
