The Lion King Diamond Edition is a classic Walk on the Wild Side!

“‘The Lion King’ is the best-selling home entertainment release of all time—and this is ‘The Lion King’ like never before,” said Bob Chapek, president of distribution, The Walt Disney Studios. “The all-new 3D format immerses viewers in the epic settings and puts them face-to-face with these beloved characters. We’re showcasing one of the all-time favorite Disney movies in theaters and making it available in Blu-ray hi-def and in Blu-ray 3D—it’s the must-see, must-own title for everyone.”  The Blu-ray debut marks the first time “The Lion King” has been available in any form since 2004.  Featuring pristine high definition picture and sound, the Blu-ray creates an incredible at-home experience with a host of picture and sound enhancements, interactive features and bonus content, including a new set of hilarious animated bloopers.

If you had the chance to see The Lion King in 3D during its current run back in theatres, I don’t have to tell you what a great representation of one of the most beloved Disney movies of all time it was! I am not the greatest fan of upconverting to 3D (or to be honest, of the 3D trend in general) but there were scenes that really wowed me! Particularly the Circle of Life and the more dramatic fight scenes.  There is so much nostalgia when seeing movie you loved as a kid in the theatre again that its hard to believe they could have done anything to the movie I wouldn’t have loved.  Nonetheless, the Blu Ray 3D coming out on Tuesday, October 4 will not disappoint!

As we have reported earlier there will be many versions to choose from, including:

  • 4-Disc Blu-ray  3D Combo Pack
  • 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack
  • 8-Disc Trilogy (featuring Blu-ray  and DVD of The Lion King, The Lion King 1 1/2, and The Lion King 2, as well as the 3D Blu-ray and a digital copy of The Lion King.
  • 1-disc DVD Edition (available on November 15)

Besides the new Disney Second Screen app sync, Sneak Peaks, Sing-a-long, and audio commentary that you can find on most new Disney Blu Ray releases, The Lion King is filled with tons of bonus content! The deleted and alternate scenes include the “Morning Report” number starring Zazu which was first released on the Platinum Edition DVD. You can also see a very cute blooper reel of out takes and a Don Hahn memoir.  The best featurette seems to be the Pride of The Lion King which is a really well done retrospective about the legacy of The Lion King. It runs almost 40 minutes and was by far the best featurette of all the bonus content!

Don’t miss this amazing film as it roars onto Blu-ray format for the first time TODAY!

  1. While I couldn’t pass up Lion King on the big screen I think when the other new classics return I will stick to the 2D versions as they would be a bit more nostalgic! (:

  2. I didn’t see the Lion King when it came out in 3D because I’m not a huge fan of the whole 3D thing. Gives me a headache watching a whole movie with the glasses on. I did, however, get my bluray a day early from DMC and watched it with my 4 year old yesterday. She LOVED it and told me she wants to watch it every day.
