Disney Celebrates National Military Appreciation Month

Disney’s Flag Retreat Ceremony

May is Military Appreciation Month, which was created back in 1999 to honor both active service members and veterans. Culminating on Memorial Day, May 30th, this month is a great time to remember and honor the many brave who have served to defend our freedoms. The National Defense Network was recently hosted at Walt Disney World Resort to commemorate Disney’s almost 100 years of support for America’s armed forces, military families, and veterans.

The show highlights Disney’s history of respect for servicemembers and veterans. This all started during the First World War when Roy Disney was a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy and Walt volunteered to be a part of the Red Cross Ambulance Corps in France. Radio host Randy Miller spoke with The Walt Disney Company CEO, Bob Chapek, and Disney Parks Experiences and Products Chairman, Josh D’Amaro during his visit. They covered topics such as Disney’s Heroes Work Here veteran hiring program. He was also able to discuss vacation planning tips for military families, the daily Flag Retreat Ceremony, and Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th Anniversary celebration, among other things.

Randy Miller had this to say about his experience at Walt Disney World: “I had no idea Disney had such a rich history supporting the troops and their families and it was a pleasure to learn more about this to share with our audience. I enjoyed speaking with Disney leaders and cast members—many of whom are veterans themselves—and hearing their amazing stories.” (Disney)
