LEGOLAND Florida Resort Is First of Its Kind to Become a Certified Autism Center

LEGOLAND® Florida Resort continues to impress us. They go above and beyond to make all their guests feel welcome. The latest evidence of this is the fact that LEGOLAND just became the first theme park resort to become a Certified Autism Center™(CAC). The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) awarded this certification. It was a result of LEGOLAND completing staff training and other requirements, including offering accommodations for guests with cognitive differences.

This certification is Resort-wide and includes LEGOLAND® Theme Park, LEGOLAND® Water Park, LEGOLAND® Hotel, LEGOLAND® Pirate Island Hotel, LEGOLAND® Beach Retreat, and Peppa Pig Theme Park. IBCCES reviewed all the resorts and was able to deliver additional recommendations and alternatives for autistic visitors and their families. Sensory guides were also developed to help guests plan for the sensory impacts of each attraction. Staff underwent the IBCCES training program, which includes information on comprehending what autism is, techniques for communication, and methods for improving the onsite experience. The training program provided perspectives from both experts and autistic individuals. The CAC certification will require ongoing learning and support. Renewal requirements will come up periodically.

According to Kelly Hornick, Head of Marketing & Communications for LEGOLAND® Florida Resort and Peppa Pig Theme Park, “We are passionate about being the Resort for families to build awesome vacation memories, and we are thankful to our partners at IBCCES for helping us be more welcoming and more inclusive to more families, including those with sensory needs.”

The program was developed with the knowledge that new experiences can be challenging for many autistic individuals, those with sensory sensitivities, and their families. More vacation spots need to be able to provide flexible options or accommodations. Whether they are hotels, zoos, aquariums, or other recreational locations, IBCCES wants to help all families have better experiences.

As Certified Autism Centers™, LEGOLAND® Florida Resort is committed to providing trained front-line team members who can better attend to autistic guests or those with other sensory sensitivities. They will furnish a sensory guide for every attraction that gives insight into how the attraction or ride may be affected by each of the five senses to make planning activities easier, and low sensory areas for guests with sensory sensitivities to take a break. Check www.legoland.com/florida/ and Guest Relations areas for an updated Accessibility Guide.
IBCCES has more than 20 years of experience in cognitive disorder training and certification. For more information, go to AutismTravel.com. They provide a free online resource for parents that lists CAC-certified destinations and provides other resources.
