I have to say, I was really excited that I got a chance to review ABC’s ‘Castle: The Complete Third Season’, which goes on sale September 20, 2011. This currently ranks as one of my favorite shows on television right now, and I jumped at the chance to review it. ‘Castle’ stars fan favorite and geek fanboy, Nathan Fillion, as Richard Castle, a bestselling crime novelist and Stana Katic as Kate Beckett, a tough NYPD cop who Castle has based his newest book character off of. The show follows Castle and Beckett as they solve murder cases all over New York City, while they both balance their personal lives, and try to uncover the truth behind the murder of Beckett’s mother’s murder. The show also stars Molly C. Quinn, Susan Sullivan, Jon Huertas, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and Seamus Dever. The show is mix of crime solving, comedy, and action, with that added dose of drama to liven things up. And it all works so well together.
‘Castle: The Complete Third Season arrives on a five DVD set, with 5.1 surround sound, widescreen picture, and over an hour of special features. Season three is probably the best season of the show so far, and is also the shows darkest. Instead of sticking to one off procedural stories, season three begins a bit of an overlong story arch that begins to deal with Beckett’s past, as we begin to see what really happened to Beckett’s mother. There is also a two part episode that deals with an extremist terror cell that threatens to bomb a public area in New York City, which is one of the seasons most intense and emotional episodes. I really like how they upped the level of what I expected from ‘Castle’ with this season. By beginning to explore a bit more of the other characters lives of Beckett’s partners Esposito and Ryan, they really began to flesh out their characters, which I really enjoyed. I’ve always enjoyed all the characters on the show, and it was nice to begin to explore some of the ones that hadn’t really been fleshed out. Moving into a bit of a darker area really put the characters into interesting situations as well, pushing them to levels we hadn’t seen before. I like when shows push their own boundaries, because it means they’re willing to let the show grow. I’m really glad to say that they did indeed let the show grow, and it works incredibly well. And nothing, and I mean nothing, will be able to prepare you for the show’s season finale. It really leaves the show in a bit of a dark place, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the show moves forward next season.
Season three also comes with some great special features that let you dive into the behind the scenes of the show. The features include:
- Deleted scenes and bloopers
- Murder They Wrote – This is a great round table discussion with ‘Castle’ star Nathan Fillion and producers Rob Bowman and Andrew Marlowe, where they discuss some of the tricks of murder mysteries, how to solve them, and give some great behind the scenes of the show.
- Castle Goes to Hollywood – One of the best episodes this season actually sees Castle and Beckett come to Hollywood to solve a murder, and we get to see the reactions and videos of the cast and crew on their trip to LA.
- Murder Board 101 – This feature is a bit of a fun one. This takes a look at what it takes to put together all the different characters for each episode. Everything from the main characters to the different side characters we meet on the show every week.
