Marvel Fans Honor Comic Creator and Artist Jack Kirby on His Would-Be 104th Birthday. Jack Kirby, was an American comic book artist, writer, and editor, who is widely regarded as one of the medium’s major innovators and one of its most prolific and influential creators. Growing up in New York City, Jack Kirby (real name: Jack Kurtzberg) learned to draw cartoon figures by tracing characters from comic strips and editorial cartoons. He is credited with creating the iconic character and First Avenger, Captain America. Throughout his career, Jack worked for both Marvel Comics and DC Comics on comic franchises such as Captain America, Fantastic Four, Fourth World, The Eternals, Thor, and New Gods.
