With that spoiler alert out of the way, let’s get down to it. Episode 3 of Marvel’s What If…? saw our jaws drop on several occasions for the most unbelievable moments. It didn’t come as a shock that we would see alternate storylines that seem to parallel the stories we are so familiar with, but let’s just say the moment Tony Stark fell dead to the floor we knew we were in for a wild ride!
We don’t want to spoil the details of HOW things happen so a quick overview of the episode should suffice for the rest of this article. Episode 3 sees a twistedly dark turn as each of the would-be Avengers from The Avengers Initiative are quickly assassinated by an unseen force. We won’t spoil that twist, but what we will discuss is how this loss affects the future of Earth without its mightiest heroes.

In the episode, Thor Odinson is thought to be assassinated by his would-be teammate Hawkeye. Leading Loki, Lady Sif, and an Asgardian Army under Loki’s command comes to “Midgard” to punish mankind for the murder of his brother.
After a brief encounter and conversion with Nick Fury about the true nature of his brother’s death, the God of Mischief teams up with Fury to bring justice to his actual murderer. Once the pair bring said murderer to justice Loki seizes his opportunity to fill a power vacuum and within hours of arriving to Earth, Loki with the help of the Asgardian Army takes over Midgard, thus becoming King Loki. So what if this means Marvel is looking to explore more of the King Loki storyline from the comics?

For those who are unfamiliar with the King Loki storyline, the comic story features a futuristic tale where Loki murders his brother Thor and destroys Earth in the process. During the battle, Lokis uses his magic to bring back the dead Avengers to fight against Thor leading to his demise.
Based on footage seen in the Loki live-action series trailers (as shown in the photo above), we know that King Loki was a potential storyline for the sister series on Disney+, with Loki Director Kate Herron and other crew members sharing that the deleted scene was meant to be featured in the first season. Leading us to believe that the scene may have been edited and a portion of the reshoots was dedicated to revamping the scene, allowing the writers to explore the King Loki storyline further in a future season. We fully expect Loki and the other Variants to search the Multiverse branches in order to achieve their goals and it would seem wasteful to not get a glimpse of the fan-favorite comic storyline.
