The Super Bowl may be only days away, but don’t expect to see any celebrations in Disney’s Magic Kingdom this year.
Today, Disney confirms that any potential Super Bowl celebrations will have to wait until next year’s big game.
Although Walt Disney World won’t host the annual Super Bowl parade down Main Street U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom Park this year, Disney will continue the time-honored tradition of featuring the Super Bowl star player in the iconic “I’m Going to Disney World!” commercial on Sunday night.
“I’m going to Disney World!” or Disneyland has become a tradition during every Super Bowl game, but have you ever wondered how that phrase started?
Back in 1987, when Michael Eisner was the CEO of Disney, he was having dinner with his wife Jane, George Lucas, and Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager who had just become the first people to fly around the world without stopping.
During the conversation, Michael asked Dick and Jeana “well, now that you’ve accomplished the pinnacle of your aspirations, what could you possibly do next?” to what Rutan responded “Im going to Disneyland” without any hesitation. Michael said “Wow, that’s cool! You made the right choice” but his wife Jane interfered and said “you know, that’s a good slogan” and that’s how that iconic phrase became such a big part of the Super Bowl games.
That year Phill Simms and John Elway received offers of $75,000 to say “I’m going to Disney World“ or “I’m going to Disneyland“ as they ran off the field after the game. This footage will later be used for a Disney commercial. The winner will also take a trip to a Disney Park in the next few days and be part of a parade in his honor!
