Tom Hanks Believes the Marvel Cinematic Universe Will Save Movie Theaters. Recently, actor Tom Hanks spoke with Collider about his new film and first live-action Western, News of the World. News of the World is based on the novel by Paulette Jiles and is set a few years after the end of the Civil War in Texas. The film is about Captain Jefferson Kyle Kid (Hanks), a veteran who goes from town-to-town reading stories from newspapers. While traveling, he meets an abandoned 10-year-old girl named Johanna (Helena Zengel), who was being escorted to Indian Affairs as she had previously been captured and raised among the Kiowa people after her family was slaughtered six years earlier. After trying to deliver the girl to local authorities, he decides to take her under his wing and return her to her only surviving relatives, which is hundreds of miles into the unforgiving wilderness.
During the interview Hanks was asked if he thinks movie theaters will survive the closures due to the pandemic and though the future is uncertain Tom shared his beliefs and how he thinks they will manage to make it through.
“A sea change was due, anyway… It was coming. Will movie theaters still exist? Absolutely, they will. In some ways, I think the exhibitors — once they’re up and open — are going to have the freedom of choice of what movies they’re going to play… Big event motion pictures are going to rule the day at the cinemas.”
Hanks added, “News of the World might be the last adult movie about people saying interesting things that’s going to play on a big screen somewhere, because after this, in order to guarantee that people show up again, we’re going to have the Marvel [Cinematic] Universe and all sorts of franchises.”
Hanks is not the only person in the business to share a note of sadness about the depreciating value of classic storytelling, with more and more films pushing for action packed stories that feature nods to classic films, but are simultaneously leaving them in the dust and moving to greater expanses. Some in the business have equated it to the classic cowboys vs. spacemen debate, referring to the “outdating” of tales of the Wild West with new adventures in space in the 60’s.
As Hanks has references, the entertainment industry ebbs and flows with new waves of content catching the attention of moviegoers and bringing them back to the theaters year after year. Another factor in the entertainment industry change is the move to digital streaming that allows avid movie watchers to enjoy new titles from the comfort of their homes. Though we hope to see theaters reopen when it is safe to do so, we do expect to see the return of many major titles from franchises such as Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Marvel’s Avengers, Back to the Future, and more to help draw audiences back into theaters.
