Bahamas closed to visitors from the US due to COVID concerns

Yesterday, Bahamian Prime Minister Huberg Minnis announced that the Bahamas is closed to visitors from the United States beginning July 22nd due to COVID-19 concerns. No end date to this order was announced.

Visitors from the U.S. are not permitted however, other international travelers are. International commercial flights and commercial vessels carrying passengers will not be permitted to enter the Bahamas unless they are from Canada, the United Kingdom or the European Union.

Additionally, and effective immediately, the Bahamas national air carrier, Bahamasair, will cease all outgoing flights to the United States. Bahamasair has flights from Freeport and Nassau to the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, Miami International Airport, and West Palm Beach International Airport.

Travelers who are visiting the Bahamas with departure dates after July 22 will be permitted to leave. “Our current situation requires decisive actions,” Minnis said.

Visitors from Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union by air or by sea from overseas will require a negative COVID-19 RT PCR test from an accredited laboratory taken within 10 days of their arrival, the prime minister stated.

The Bahamas just reopened their borders to international travelers on July 1. Grand Bahama, according to Minnis, has seen a resurgence of COVID-19 cases after being free of the virus for a little over 2 months. He attributes the increase in cases to the reinstitution of international flights and passenger sea transport.

“If cases continue to spike increase, my government is prepared to implement more restrictive measures and this is not our wish, but if it has to be done, it will be done. We will continue to be guided by the recommendations of our health professionals,” said Minnis.
