Disneyland Unions Demand Parks Don’t Reopen in July

The Orange County Register is reporting that Disneyland unions want Disney to delay reopening the Anaheim theme parks. The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions sent a letter demanding that California Gov. Gavin Newsom stop Disney’s Anaheim theme parks from reopening on July 17 out of concern for employee safety.

“Disney wants clearance from the government to reopen the Disneyland Resort in July,” according to the letter from the Coalition of Resort Labor Unions. “Unfortunately, despite intensive talks with the company, we are not yet convinced that it is safe to reopen the parks on Disney’s rapid timetable.”

The coalition of unions represents 17,000 Disneyland Cast Members. “We are not yet satisfied that it is safe to reopen the resort,” according to the letter posted to the unions’ Facebook page. “There are numerous questions about safety which Disney has not yet answered.”

Disneyland‘s current plans are to open the Downtown Disney District on July 9, the theme parks on July 17, and two of the three resort hotels on July 23, pending government approval.

The new Disneyland COVID-19 health and safety protocols for visitors would include:

  • Reduced capacity in the parks
  • Required face coverings for visitors 2 years old and older
  • Temperature checks for visitors before entering the parks
  • Physical distancing throughout the parks
  • Increased cleaning and disinfecting, especially in high-traffic areas
  • Additional handwashing and hand sanitizer locations
  • Contactless payments at shops and restaurants

Health and safety guidelines for Disney employees will include:

  • Required face coverings and temperature checks
  • Adjusting work practices to promote physical distancing
  • Increased cleaning in work areas
  • Encouraging workers to stay home when ill

Along with taking Cast Member’s temperatures daily when they arrive for work, the unions want Disneyland employees to be tested for COVID-19.

“Disney has rejected or not yet responded to important safety proposals made by CRLU member unions,” according to the union letter. “Therefore, at this point we do not know if the resort can be operated safely.”

Disneyland has not made any official statement changing its plans for reopening the resort.
