Billie Lourd Filled In For Her Mother As Leia In Flashback Sequence of 'The Rise of Skywalker'

Billie Lourd Filled In For Her Mother As Leia In Flashback Sequence of ‘The Rise of Skywalker‘. The passing of Carrie Fisher led to major changes within the latest Star Wars trilogy, primarily with the portrayal of General Organa, who was meant to be the key to the original plot of the film. Due to some brilliant VFX artists and the right amount of previous footage and recordings of Fisher from the prior films, Director J.J. Abrams was able to incorporate Fisher into the film with minimal impact on her visage, but having to drastically change the progression of the film.

One scene did prove difficult to do without the late actress, which is where her daughter, Billie Lourd, stepped in to help fill the void of Carrie’s absence. For those who have not seen Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker you may want to stop reading here. Consider this your SPOILER ALERT.

ILM Visual Effects Supervisor Patrick Tubach shared the news that Billie was the body double/motion capture for the flashback scene between Luke and Leia. “Billie was playing her mother,” Tubach shared with Yahoo Entertainment. “It was a poignant thing, and something that nobody took lightly — that she was willing to stand in for her mom.”

Though the scene may have been brief, we can only imagine the emotional impact Billie’s role had on the fellow cast and crew of the film.

“It was an emotional thing for everybody to see her in that position. It felt great for us, too,” Tubach pointed out. “If you’re going to have someone play [Fisher’s] part, it’s great that it’s [Billie] because there are a lot of similarities between them that we were able to draw from. The real challenge was just making the Leia footage we had to work with fit in that scene.”

Though originally the idea had been that no one would portray Leia in Carrie’s stead in Episode IX, it is sweet to see her daughter was willing to fill in her position when it became crucial to complete the stories from the Skywalker Saga. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for all things Star Wars!
