Sesame Place is a theme park located in Langhorne, Pennsylvania based on the children’s educational show Sesame Street. It is here that you can meet classic Sesame Street characters (including Elmo!), take a stroll down Sesame Street, experience rides themed after your favorite characters, and much more! The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) has designated Sesame Place s the first theme park in the world as a Certified Autism Center. IBCCES is a global leader in online training and certification programs.
To achieve this certification, Sesame Place Team Members must receive specialized training in the following areas:
- Sensory Awareness
- Motor Skills
- Autism Overview
- Program Development
- Social Skills
- Communication
- Environment
- Emotional Awareness
There is even an IBCCES Sensory Guide which can be downloaded HERE. This guide provides insight on how a child may process each of the rides and attractions found at the theme park.
Sesame Place also offers a Special Access Program. This program allows priority boarding on up to six dry rides and up to three water slides. The choices of water slides include Slimey’s Chutes, Sky Splash, Sesame Streak, and Slippery Slopes. Big Bird’s Rambling River is also applicable to the Special Access Pass. To be enrolled in the Special Access Program you must first apply for the Rider Accessibility Program. Simply fill out a questionnaire and return it to The Welcome Center.
Sesame Place also provides relief from sensory stimulation if needed. There are now two quiet rooms that are located near Big Bird’s Rambling River that can be utilized. The rooms include adjustable lighting as well as a comfortable seating area.
Sesame Place will also be offering WhispEars. WhispEars are noise-canceling headphones that have been provided by KidCo. Both The Family Care Center and The Welcome Center can provide these. They are available on a first come, first serve basis. Remember to return these by the end of the day!
The area behind the Sesame Street Neighborhood is a low sensory area. There is also an area located by the Twiddle Bug Tracks, next to Ernie’s Teeny Tiny Tidal Wave. While not designated quiet areas, they are generally less crowded than the rest of the park. (I can attest to this being true! These are my favorite places to take a break.)
Direct character interaction during parade viewing can be avoided. Guests can watch the parade where it begins and/or several rows behind the parade viewing line. Character dine interaction can also be limited when requested.
Finally, Julia is the newest addition to Sesame Place. 123 Smile with Me! is where she can be found. Julia is a sweet and curious 4-year-old with autism. I had the opportunity to meet her this past season and she really is sweet.
