Disney Acquires Sadé – A Fairytale About an African Princess

Disney Acquires Sadé

Is Disney getting their first African princess?! The Walt Disney Company has obtained a pitch for a live-action fairytale, Sadé.  This tale of an African Princess is based on an original story by  Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer.

Shokunbi and Palmer are set to pen the screenplay together while Rick Famuyiwa will produce and Scott Falconer is attached at executive producer.

The story focuses on a young African girl, Sadé.  Her kingdom comes under the threat of a mysterious evil force so Sadé takes on her recently discovered magical warrior powers to protect her people – and herself. Together with the prince of the kingdom, Sadé sets out on an adventure that allows to her to accept and embrace that which makes her special and save her people.

Quarterbacking this project for the studio will be Tendo Nagenda and Zoe Kent.

This film will have the distinct honor of being the first time we see an African character as an original Disney Princess.  Back in 2009 we saw our first Black princess when the studio released “The Princess and the Frog” – an animated Disney favorite.

As of this point a director has not been linked to the film.  No production date or release dates have been announced.

Are you excited by this news?  I know the storyline has me very intrigued.  And I love seeing different cultures represented by Disney princesses. And it looks like this is set to be a live-action film straight from release, which is interesting as well.  Live-action remakes of classic princess tales like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast have been very successful for Disney in recent years.
