Sixty-four teams from around the country will descend on Walt Disney World and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for the 61st edition of the Pop Warner Super Bowl which begins tomorrow (December 2nd).
For those unfamiliar with the Bowl, the Football National Championships consists of 64 teams from 8 Pop Warner Regions playing in five age/weight classifications: Jr. Pee Wee (ages 8-11), Pee Wee (ages 9-12), Jr. Varsity (ages 10-13), Unlimited (11-14, 105-lb. minimum) and Varsity (ages 12-15). The teams play a 7-9 game schedule and at the end of the regular season (usually in October) prepares for league playoffs. Once the team champion has been decided a team wins the right to participate in regional championships. The winners at the regional levels are then invited to the championship showdown at Disney World. Each advancing team is guaranteed to play two games at the Super Bowl, with a National Champion crowned in each age-weight division and competition level. There are two competition levels; Division I and Division II.
The event will last for six days with 72 games scheduled to take place including the Division I Jr. Varsity National Championship game which will be featured live on the ESPN Family of Networks.
ESPN is already recognizing two stand-out teams at this year’s playoffs. The Hoffman Estates Redhawks (Jr. Varsity Division) have one the past three Pop Warner Division II national championships which is a tournament record. This year they step up to the Jr. Varsity Class of Division I where they will put their 11-o record on the line. They’ll take on the Dorchester Eagles on December 3rd at 3pm.
Another team to watch are the Northwest Raiders (Varsity division) out of Philadelphia who have a current record of 11-o and have won the last three Division I Varsity Championships- also a record. They will defend their three straight titles beginning on December 3rd at 1pm when the square off against the Harvey Colts.
The Cheer & Dance Championships will also take place during this time with more than 300 teams competing in a 5-day event at the HP Field House. The teams compete in four age ranges (Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Jr. Varsity & Varsity) as well as in sizes (Small, Medium & Large) and four competition categories (YCADA PW1, PW2, PW3 & PW4). The Dance teams compete in two competition categories (YCADA Pom Performance and Theme Dance).
