On Monday, ASIFA-Hollywood announced that animation historian Didier Ghez will receive the June Foray Award for significant and benevolent or charitable impact on the art and industry of animation, which will be awarded at the 2018 Annie Awards in February.
Ghez is a noted authority on Disney Animation history and has published several books, the most recent is They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney’s Late Golden Age (The 1940s – Part Two) [Chronicle Books, October 2017] , which is the third volume in a planned six-volume set examining hidden, often previously unpublished, art and history from Disney’s classic animators. The series has been lauded by Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, and film historian Leonard Maltin. He also publishes the influential Disney History blog.
The Annie Awards are frequently referred to as the Academy Awards of animation, and are a great honor in the industry. Ghez was clearly moved by the news of the award, “I was stunned to learn that I am being awarded the June Foray Award. There is no honor that could mean more to me and no award that could excite me more than this one. And of course, I would not have gotten it if it weren’t for all the animation historians who helped me tremendously throughout the years and who carry on supporting me today.”
