Photos: ‘Remember Me! La Celebracion Del Dia De Muertos’ at Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion

Dia de Muertos is a two day Mexican holiday that brings families together to celebrate their loved ones who have already said their final goodbyes. Families celebrate the holiday with festivals, grand feasts, and taking part in the activities that their loved ones enjoyed most in their lives. The new exhibit in the Mexico Pavilion at Epcot in Walt Disney World, celebrates the treasured Mexican holiday and showcases the artwork of prominent Mexican and Mexican-American artists.

Lets take a photo tour of Remember Me! La Celebracion del Dia de Muertos.

Remember…Although it happens during the same time of year, Dia de Muertos is not the same as Halloween.

Pictured above (on the right) is Catrina the “Fancy Woman” created by Jose Guadalupue Posada, Catrina was meant to poke fun at elite society and was a humbling reminder that nobody, not even the rich and famous, can escape the hand of death. Calavera de la Catrina is now one of the most recognized symbols of Dia de Muertos.

The sugar skulls pictured above, are created by artists by boiling sugar and pouring it into a mold, which they then decorate. It is thought that the sweetness of the sugar is a balance to the bitterness of death. The sugar skulls are often exchanged in a similar way to valentines.

Papel picado are elaborate paper flags themed, cut, and hung as decor during the holiday.
